Check in: are you breathing?
/
Comments10
Take few moments throughout your day to check and see whether you are breathing comfortably, or holding your breath. Try to notice your breath in tense, stressful or uncomfortable situations. If you find yourself holding your breath at any point, relax your body and take three full deep breaths.
How did it go?
This week I was under the weather with a sore throat. I was lying in bed one afternoon trying to nap and heal when I noticed my breath. I could not believe how rapid and shallow it was – and I was lying in bed – just resting. Once I turned my attention to it, I managed to slow down and regulate my breathing. I am amazed at how varied the breath can be depending on the circumstances.
I completely agree! The default seems to be shallow and somewhat rushed. I have this feature on my watch that beeps and alerts me at random points of the day by saying “Let’s breathe”. Every time I get it I notice my breath, and I catch myself holding it often. I never pay attention to it in bed, so I will have to try that! I have a hunch that it probably depends on the book that I am reading 🙂
after having broken toes (2) I was able to get back on mat this morning… have been mediation of an evening as well & this morning added the mediation after my practice as i had time… on the weekend someone told me they start every morning with a huge smile no matter how they feel when they wake & IT WORKS i love it
Thank you so much for this forum Olga! I love your work!! I studied with Gary and also completed the foundations and therapy program (in 2014). You may not remember me but we met in 2012. I have been following your work and emails and they are so helpful and supportive. You are an inspiration to me. Thank you again!!!
Loving these tips and ideas!
I meditate daily, so I am doing the check-in a few minutes before my morning meditation. I will also do the breath check-in a couple of other times throughout today because I have found I often “cut my breath off” when I am stressed. My goal is to keep letting my breath flow, whatever is going on!
Olga thank you for inviting us into this exploration. It comes at a pivotal time for me as I go to surgery next week…..so I am looking forward to bringing attention to the reading and practices. Ordered the book today.
Dear Olga
This tool reminded me a lot to let my breath flow even during busy times at work.
Thank you!
I like your website so much and look always forward to read your interesting ideas & blogs.
Best regards
Marianne
I sat with the noticing this evening after my regular meditation. I found that as I turned inward to notice energy, I could sense lines of energy moving in different body areas – spinal column, arms, etc . As I continued to follow these with attention, various body systems presented to be “seen”. Clear feeling level images of skeletal system, then nervous system, circulatory system…and on and on through ear/sinus canals, eyes etc …It was sort of like a Yoga Nidra scan, but not directed by another or by my own choosing. Body sensations simply wanting to be seen, felt,… Read more »
