Get clarity on what you want

What do you want your life to look and feel like? What are you currently missing? Do you have a good balance between work, self-care, relationships and fun? As we head into fall, now is a good opportunity to slow down and get some clarity about what you want moving forward.

In psychology there is a term “affective niche” that defines everything your brain notices in the moment as it relates to your current physiological balance. This is your body making sure that you notice things that are relevant to your survival and well-being right now – everything else is perceived as noise.

I believe it works in similar ways when you define your focus in terms of your life goals – what do you prioritize right now? Once you define your priorities, your brain will create an “affective niche” around them and will begin notice opportunities that relate to your goals. If you do not have clear goals in mind, how will your brain know what to focus on in this daily bombardment of information and stimuli? So this week let’s try to get some clarity about what you want in four main areas of your life in the near future.

HOW TO: Get a pen and a piece of paper and split your paper into four columns. Name your columns: Work, Self-care, Relationships, Fun. Then write down at least one goal in each column that you would like to accomplish by the end of this year. Try to be as specific as you can. Then read each goal, close your eyes and repeat it with your eyes closed, let it sink in. Repeat this process with each goal. How does it feel?
