Release trapped heat: A standing yoga practice

When you feel wired, frustrated, or anxious, sometimes the best thing you can do is move that energy through. Stillness can feel impossible when you’re overwhelmed or running hot (physically or mentally), and forcing calm before you’re ready rarely works. This practice meets you where you are, giving that charge a place to go.

This short practice is useful for times when you feel charged, worked up, and holding more heat than you’d like. Through large, dynamic standing movements, you’re invited to meet that internal fire directly rather than suppress it. These expansive movements help circulate built-up heat, mobilize the whole body, and give excess energy a healthy direction to flow. As you move, you begin to lengthen your breath and slow down, creating just enough structure for the fire to transform rather than overwhelm. The aim is to feel more centered, more in your body, and less like you’re about to boil over.

Give it a try and see how it feels!

This practice is included in our new yoga series Embrace the Change: Yoga for perimenopause, menopause and beyond.

The series consists of two webinars and ten full practices. Each full practice is thoughtfully designed with three distinct modules:

1. Mobility: Lubricating joints and fascia, restoring fluidity, and easing physical stiffness
2. Strength: Maintaining functional strength, muscle mass, bone density, and stability
3. Flexibility: Supporting range of motion and releasing accumulated tension.

The long practices have been broken down into shorter sessions that can be done separately, making it easier to fit them into the day and focus on the elements—mobility, strength, or flexibility—that are most important in that moment.
