Take a conscious shower
According to yoga sutra 1.35, “Objective sensory perception stabilizes and focuses thought.” It is listed as one of the ways to facilitate one-pointed focus and overcome any kind of mental obstacles. Once you develop one-pointed focus, the mastery of your mind will extend “from the infinitely small to the infinitely large”. You do not need your yoga mat to cultivate that sensory awareness. You can do it while washing dishes, tending to your garden or taking a shower. So this week let’s try to infuse those moments of mindfulness into our daily activities.
HOW TO: This week every time you take a shower, make a point of savoring your sensory experience of it. Notice the water pressure and temperature on your skin, experience the sounds, marvel at the tiny drops of water in the light around you, and so on. Try to keep your mind clear of thoughts and direct your attention to the feedback from your senses, focus on your experience. Notice how you feel afterwards.
Ho! This week’s challenge will be a big one. I’m almost always overwhelmed by thoughts (and not easy ones) when I’m in the shower. It’s really important for me to be attentive to my thoughts, in order to let them pass by and not be caught in a rush of anxiety. Ouf! But I’m able to do it… ;D)
