Yoga boost: Release tension in the hips and integrate your brain hemispheres
Your right and left brain hemispheres approach the tasks you do throughout your day a bit differently: the left one looks at things linearly, as a sequence, and the right one more whole-istically. The curious thing is that, although the hemispheres need to cooperate, they can instead be involved in a power struggle. The cooperation between the right and left brain is essential for us to learn better, function more intelligently, and become proficient in anything. Whatever it is you are engaged in during the day, each hemisphere has something important to contribute for you to have access to both technique and inspiration.
In this short practice, we work with the right and the left side of your body separately and direct the energy into the lower body to release tension in the hips. Then, we use Nadi Shodhana (Alternate Nostril Breathing), “rub your tummy / pat your head” technique, and Hakini mudra to rebalance the relationship between the right and left sides of the body and integrate your right and left brain hemispheres.
Thank you Olga. I love the holistic nature of this practice with underlying emphasis on the vayus.
Thank you, Carol! Attention to the energetics seems to add potency to the practice; wouldn’t you say?
I liked this whole sequence, especially the end (after nodi shodhana) focusing on and then linking the two sides of the body. I also appreciate the shorter practices, 20-30 minutes. Thank you !
Namaste, Diane King
Of course, Diane, I am so happy to hear that it worked for you! And I hear you about shorter practices – so much easier to fit those into one’s day. I think we’ll stick with those for a while 🙂
Hi Olga, thank you so much for all the work you put into these sequences. These short, mostly standing ones are great to do in small spaces while traveling. It usually takes me about a week to get my hips properly rebalanced after a very long journey (since a lower back injury ~15 years ago), but I recently did this yoga practice every day while on holiday and it made my back/hips happy straight away!
Thank you, Zara; so happy to hear that! I use these when I travel, too; even partially at the airport 🙂
